It’s not you; it’s us. Or, at least that’s what we told ourselves when we made the decision to break up with our ombré hair. When just about every D-lister and girl on the subway was sporting the faded-follicles trend, we decided it was time to move on. But we must admit: We’ve missed our ombré. That lazy girl’s I-don’t-care-about-my-hair-and-yet-I-still-look-amazing look was so, well, us. And while we feel a lot better about our locks not looking like a fried broom, there’s something to be said about having the hair that every girl envies.
Much like an on and off again relationship, we were both nervous and excited to see the trend make a comeback. Sort of. When we spotted the reverse ombré on the runways and, most recently, in the Luv AJ lookbook a few months ago, we loved it, but couldn’t see ourselves making that kind of long-term commitment to Technicolor roots. Enter hair chalking, which is exactly what it sounds like. Using basic art supply store chalks, the color is super easy to apply and just as easy to remove (shampoo, anyone?). You simply wet the chalk, apply it where you want it, and lock it in with a little heat. It won’t rub off on your clothes, and there’s zero commitment.
After a total why didn’t we think of that moment and more than a few times getting jealous over Kate Bosworth’s teal tips and Lauren Conrad’s pastel peak-through, we’re finally ready to follow suit now that we know we won’t be stuck with My Little Pony hair for a month. Like a bad boyfriend, you just can’t quit — ombré may be that trend that never truly goes away, but right now, we’re okay with that.
What about you? Would you try this rainbow root trend? Would you dare use chalk on your locks?
So, yeah, we don’t have Monday off, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to party like we do. To help you get some LOLs while you’re getting ready — hopefully giant bottle of Pinot in hand — we’re back at it, putting together a top 10 list of celeb pics that helped us procrastinate this week. So, go ahead, take a big gulp with us and click on through for a quick hit of voyeurism that is so much better than that two-month-old Us Weekly hanging out on your desk.
We get the opportunity to see a lot of amazing things during Fashion Week, but this is pretty high on our list of cool stuff: Scoring a sneak peek at the makeup for Rebecca Minkoff’s fall ’12 show. We headed to Minkoff’s showroom, where Mark celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh was on hand to create a look that perfectly complemented Minkoff’s beautifully textured pieces and sumptuous color palette. “The collection was inspired by Ewan McGregor’s documentary Long Way Round, but re-imagining the protagonist as a woman,” said Minkoff. “We wanted the collection to reflect what she would wear. She’s a confident, courageous woman on a journey of personal empowerment — a modern woman with moxie.”
So, what did that mean for makeup? Apparently, it was open to interpretation — Quynh went through a total of six looks before settling on the final one. Using the color palette of corals, royal blues, turquoise, and purple as a guide, she dreamt up an array of bold eye looks, each more stunning than the last. The final look, — a gorgeous, gradient plum eye with a dewy texture — was by far the coolest thing we saw throughout the test, so we were stoked when it got Rebecca’s thumbs up. Here, check out some of the (still amazing) looks that didn’t make it, and get the scoop on how you can snag that sweet ombré eye for yourself.
